Reading with your child

I think that this is one of the most important things that we can do with either our tiny, or older children. The time together is a wonderful time for bonding, whilst also building the child's vocabulary by exposing them to new words. Imagination is also sparked, and a love of books can be fostered.

This is a wonderful way to connect.

I agree, britjojo. I know of one mother and son in particular who watch a great deal of television, but I never hear of them sharing any books.

I think if a child lacked interest in books, their attention could be sparked by starting with some cross-over stories that have been made into movies or TV shows as well, then hopefully they'll enjoy the books for themselves.

I agree! My boys love books! My oldest is now reading on his own and he loves to read to his little brother.
We still are sure to read to the oldest, we read chapter books to him. It does wonders to improve the vocabulary!

I, too, agree! We go to the library at least twice a week and read books together often. One of the other things that's kind of nice in our house is that my husband and I are big readers ourselves so the kids constantly are seeing us with a book in our hands.

I agree. My daughter's favorite toy is a book, and she doesn't even read yet. I have wonderful memories of my mom reading chapter books with me, a little each night, and I am still an avid reader! It is some of the best memories I have with my mom.

I would agree that this is very important to do with your children. I have two sons and they both love books. The youngest cannot read yet but he loves to listen to me read him a book. That and I always have a book that I am reading so they see me doing it alot in my spare time.

I have five grandchildren, I agree reading to your children is as important as talking to the child. The age of a child corresponds with different book levels, so I try to find time to read individually with each child.
